10 Video Games You Weren’t Expecting To Make You Cry

10. Dark Souls

Dark Souls is a game that could reduce a grown man to tears. No, not tears of frustration and agony (though those are common too), but tears for lost friends, bitterness and loneliness. The minimalist delivery of Dark Souls' story has won the game unbelievable levels of acclaim and rightfully so - here, rather than be told everything in walls of text, players are encouraged to explore, theorise and discover characters, lore and storylines. In particular, the supporting cast of Dark Souls are well worth discovering, though very few of their stories end well. Solaire of Astora pops up regularly throughout the game and his cheery, bright persona is very welcome in the bleak, dark world of Lordran. However, as Solaire journeys through the undead world, his quest becomes more and more futile. His search for his own sun leads him to despair and loneliness; without intervention from the player, Solaire will be driven insane and attack the hero when next seen. Dark Souls is full of these stories of personal tragedy and loss, adding a dark depth to the world of Lordran. All of them are moving, thought-provoking and, once their often tragic conclusions are laid out in front of the player, very distressing.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
