10 Video Games Where Evil Won
2. Diablo
Blizzard’s iconic series set the trend for hack-and-slash
dungeon crawlers, inspiring a genre of games that included sequels and
expansions. But rarely does the story end well for its protagonists in Diablo
and the original title is no exception.
First released back in 1997, Diablo took place within
Tristam, the Kingdom of Khanduras’ capital as you attempt to free it from
Hell-spawned evil and these adventures culminated in a final battle with Diablo
himself, Lord of Terror.
Killing his mortal form, the protagonist then attempts to contain his essence within a soulstone, placing it into your own head and sacrificing themselves. But as Diablo II reveals, it was all for nothing.
Retold in II as a warrior trying to contain Diablo’s soul
within him, Diablo instead took over this Warrior’s body and ended up providing
him a new vessel instead. So rather than stopping him, it became clear that your
valiant efforts in the first game were completely futile.
