King’s Quest II is the sequel to the title that turned Sierra Entertainment’s point-and-click adventures into some of the most well-known games of their day.

Like its predecessor, King’s Quest II is a pretty unforgiving experience, laying deadly traps at every step of the way and dishing out game overs for every little mistake.

However, although you might think having to watch your character die gruesome deaths every time you fail is already sufficient punishment, the game actually holds a much more horrible penalty for forgetful players—a permanent softlock.

The two main areas in the game are separated by a rotting rope bridge suspended over a giant chasm.

The first time you step past the bridge, the game warns you that crossing it again might cause it to collapse, and indeed, using the bridge seven times will break it and prevent you from reaching the other side for the rest of your playthrough.

The thing is, the game expects you to backtrack between the two sides a lot, so if you forget to do something and cross the bridge one too many times, you will softlock yourself and make it impossible to beat the game.

Games really used to be ruthless, huh?
