10 Video Games You Didn't Know Were Hidden In Other Games
3. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks - Mortal Kombat 2
The Midway guys took the Mortal Kombat idea in a different direction with 2005's Shaolin Monks spin-off. Action adventure was all the rage at the time, and the Mortal Kombat brand was missing out. So we were treated to a relatively competent adventure brawler which did well to capture the feel of the core series. Spin-offs are usually write-offs, so this was a pleasant surprise. But did you know that if the endless questing and button-bashing action began to wear thin, there was a tasty bit of traditional MK bloodshed waiting for you in the cracks? Indeed, with a bit of hard work by completing Smoke's 5 sub-missions (or a bit of "up, down, square, circle, back, back, forward, stand up, sit down, touch your nose" cheat code trickery) you could unlock the full arcade version of the brilliant and timeless Mortal Kombat 2. Hell, that's almost worth the cover price all on its own. Here's the big question: if you scored 250 2-player victories in this hidden arcade fighter, would it still unlock the secret Pong game? Because that would just take this Inception "game within a game" metaphor to a whole new depth. Ok, so off you go then, let us know if you get it right.
Game-obsessed since the moment I could twiddle both thumbs independently. Equally enthralled by all the genres of music that your parents warned you about.
