10 Video Games You Were Ready To Hate
2. Star Wars Battlefront II
If you thought the modern Star Wars movies received significant backlash, just wait till you see the lasting anger towards this game.
Despite Star Wars being a property that has historically housed some of the best games ever made, such as Knights Of The Old Republic, the franchise lost a lot of credit within the gaming community after The Walt Disney Company acquired the rights to it and subsequently shut down the in-house video game division, LucasArts. Publication of new Star Wars games then proceeded most notably under EA, with a reboot of the Battlefront games to tie in to the new movie canon. This first game was received mostly positively, with praise for almost all aspects bar the lacking, season pass-based content model.
Then Battlefront II happened.
Plagued with controversies from the start, Star Wars Battlefront II became subject to not only mixed to negative critical reception, but mass review bombing thanks to microtransactions presented within the pre-release beta.
Having implemented a loot box system that could provide substantial gameplay advantages in exchange for real world money, alongside a poorly-designed rewards system and exploitable multiplayer, the game earned a massively controversial reputation as it seemed uncaring towards overall player experience.
The egregious nature of the randomly selected rewards caused the game (alongside Overwatch) to come under investigation by multiple governments for constituting unlicensed gambling before it ever fully launched. Microtransactions were eventually removed from the game entirely, but if even world leaders are ready to hate your game, that’s gotta be a new low.
