10 Video Games You Were Ready To Hate
1. Diablo Immortal
As the game whose announcement spawned the iconic “Is this an out-of-season April Fools joke?” meme thanks to the commentary of one brave and rightfully pissed-off fan, you know Diablo Immortal has to take the top spot.
A once beloved action-RPG series, developer Blizzard essentially murdered hopeful fan expectations for a new main (or at the very least PC-based) Diablo installement by debuting Diablo Immortal at BlizzCon 2018. A mobile game? Seriously?! Fans were furious, and industry insiders were bewildered by the company’s bizarre gamble, with Blizzard’s stock even falling by 7% in the week following the announcement.
Fortunately, early demos of the game showcased enjoyable combat and solid art direction. Both controller support and that longed-for PC version of the game were also later announced, giving the poor fans an inkling of hope.
Unfortunately, release saw Blizzard once again shoot the game, the fans, and itself in the foot when the previously shrouded microtransaction model actually encountered consumers. Fans found Immortal's monetization of not just cosmetic items, but key upgrades and progression wholly offensive, and though it was confirmed that almost all of the game’s content was eventually unlockable without spending a single real-world penny, the damage had long since been done.
We can only hope that the upcoming Diablo IV might resurrect the series, but after this debacle, it's understandable that many of us are ready to hate that game, too.
