And finally, we have the war FPS that changed everything.

Though the Call of Duty franchise was already well-established as a genre mainstay by this point, 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare decisively reinvented the franchise as a AAA blockbuster juggernaut.

Between its uniquely cinematic, perspective-switching campaign, and a wildly addictive multiplayer suite which helped popularise rank progression in shooters, Modern Warfare basically created the formula for the modern FPS.

Though subsequent entries have introduced more dynamic and, frankly, wacky gameplay variations, the original Modern Warfare is in many ways still the best of the bunch, defined best by its outstanding map design and simple-yet-moreish progression loop.

Very much the video game equivalent of a huge-budget blockbuster war movie, Modern Warfare is a technical masterpiece which also dared to offer up some uniquely unsettling perspectives on the toils of warfare.
