10 War Video Games You Must Play Before You Die
5. This War Of Mine
This War of Mine shifts the focus away from kitted-out soldiers in huge armies towards those usually kept in the periphery of war video games - the regular folk desperately trying to survive as the bullets fly.
Victory is nothing more than survival in this game, as the player simply attempts to hold on long enough for a cease-fire between warring factions to be declared, which occurs after an indeterminate period.
In the meantime, you'll face off against several embattled sides and harsh inclement weather, while a rich morality system asks players to consider whether to help or hinder their fellow survivors.
This is complicated further by both permadeath and the randomised nature of the sorties, ensuring no two players will experience things quite the same.
If war games are often criticised for treating human life with a certain disposable flippancy, nobody could say that about This War of Mine.
The game does a fantastic job of making the player feel the overpowering dread of the scenario, but it's also not pure misery-porn either.
