4. Resident Evil 4
After the release of Resident Evil 3, Capcom's survival horror franchise was in desperate need of a shake up. Attempting to revitalise the long-running series, the publisher ordered a bunch of different prototypes for what would become Resident Evil 4, all completely different from one another.
Most of these were short lived, including an action-heavy prototype that eventually became Devil May Cry, but one came close to being the next instalment in the RE franchise.
Sticking with the fixed camera and tank controls of the original, this version of Resident Evil 4 still featured Leon Kennedy, only instead of shooting Las Plagas-infected villagers he was facing off against ghosts and zombies in a terrifying haunted mansion.
Putting the emphasis on supernatural rather than biological horror, despite the familiar controls and perspective this incarnation of RE4 would have moved the series far away from its roots.
It's cool to look back on now, and it's clear that a lot of the ideas did make it into the final release, but there's no denying that the actual Resident Evil 4 was a marked improvement on this original effort.
