Alistair is one of the most popular and beloved characters in the Dragon Age franchise. Part of his success can be attributed to his quirky but fun personality, but another equally important factor of why he's so important to people is because he's the only companion in Origins who you can transform from a sidekick into a king!

At the beginning of the story, Alistair is a fledgling Grey Warden, not much more experienced than you, whom Duncan took under his wing after he couldn't find a place for himself in the templar order.

Unlike your character, Alistair doesn't have nerves of steel or leadership skills, which is why he tends to doubt himself a lot and prefers to let you take the reins in your quest to stop the Blight.

However, eventually you learn that Alistair is the bastard son of the old king of Ferelden, making him the rightful heir to the throne. The Grey Warden is obviously skeptical about the idea, but if you work on his self-esteem throughout the game and teach him to be more assertive, Alistair can actually be convinced to become the next ruler!

And just like that, your wisecracking idiot friend becomes the single most important person in the country.
