10 Worst Politicians In Video Games
1. Andrew Ryan (Bioshock)
What is it about utopias that always sees them turn into dystopias? And it doesn’t get much dystopic than the underwater city of Rapture – the logical end-point of Ayn Rand’s objectivist politics, which sees selfishness as a virtue and society as something to be undone and overcome. At the centre of this madness is the charismatic psychopath and de-factor head of state, Andrew Ryan.
There’s something very Bond villain about Andrew Ryan’s dream of creating the perfect society under the sea (Carl Stromberg in The Spy Who Loved Me, anyone?). The real problem with Ryan is the same one we see across the political spectrum – he’s a dogmatic true believer. He’s not wrong, can’t be wrong. Anything that deviates from his own warped ideology must be shut down (read: murdered).
So what if Rapture’s citizens have gone off their heads? Who cares if Ryan’s political philosophy results in the deaths of hundreds of people who genuinely believed Ryan’s Rapture would lead to a happier, individualistic life? That’s their lookout, mate. That’s the whole point, after all.
