100 Things You Never Knew About Resident Evil
74. Resident Evil 2's Remodeling Gun
In February 2019, Capcom released a series of roundtable discussion videos following the release of Resident Evil 2 Remake which saw the game's team bonding over dinner and discussing the project in detail. There's lots of development tidbits across the videos, but perhaps the most visually striking is the concept inventory for the game.
Taking a leaf out of the PS1 playbook, the game features a familiar navy blue design and pixellated icons for each item in Leon's possession. Considering this is purely concept art rather than a functional UI, it makes various assumptions about the game - separating Leon's knife and lighter, and flash grenades, into separate parts of his inventory.
The biggest curiosity however is the appearance of a "Remodeling Gun". The graphic is almost certainly placeholder, showing Jill's STI Eagle from RE3, but the item itself has remained a mystery since. Fans have theorised it had some impact on upgrading parts or was a mistranslation and referred to a gun that itself had been repaired or put back together.
We'll never know, but for diehards it was exciting to see RE3's classic purple handgun show up in a random behind the scenes video.
