100 Things You Never Knew About Resident Evil
57. Leon's Original Name
Whilst one of the most obvious changes from the Resident Evil 1.5 to the final game is clearly the presence of Elza Walker over Claire Redfield, that doesn't mean Leon S. Kennedy was necessarily the first choice for the male counterpart for the game.
Or, at the very least, that wasn't the first pick for a name.
Early design documents do indeed show a character who is clearly Leon but he's given the name Grant Bitman. Kind of hard to imagine the Resident Evil series still going strong decades later on the back of a government agent called Grant, so the choice was perhaps a wise one.
Additionally, early concept sketches show Grant with a pet bloodhound. It's a shame we've never seen this idea come back. Perhaps when Leon retires and is safely out of harm's way he can finally get himself a canine best friend.
