11 Powerful Video Game Opening Sequences That Gave You Chills
6. Losing Everything - Mass Effect 2
I can't recall a more impactful time when I had to realise my jaw was hanging open, than after the opening to Mass Effect 2. Having already spent upwards of 60 hours with your own custom-made Shepard and a hand-picked selection of favourite crewmembers, to then see the whole lot - including your main character - blown to smithereens was devastating.
But not just devastating - interesting, intriguing and ultimately mysterious. How the hell can Bioware kill everyone off in the opening act?
Well, they didn't - not entirely, anyway. Shepard is promptly revived after many years of surgery that turn him or her into a half-human, half-synthetic hybrid, and the rest of your scuttled crew move on with their lives, having assumed their Commander was long gone.
Knowing all is lost yourself and having to claw your way back into the folds of humanity all over again, easily gives Mass Effect 2 one of the greatest introductory sequences of all time.
