The main person who confronted Dong Zhuo on his takeover of the government, and the only person who had enough battle-hardened soldiers in the capital to oppose Dong Zhuo, was the governor of the northern frontier province, Bing. This man, Ding Yuan, had a stellar military record and more importantly, he had the man who is largely considered to be the greatest warrior of the time on his roster – Lü Bu.

Lü Bu led the Bing army against Dong Zhuo and beat the dictator easily. But Lü Bu was a greedy man and Dong Zhuo sent gifts of great value: pearls, jewels, and even a wonderful horse. Lü Bu accepted them all and then marched into Ding Yuan's tent. Keep in mind that in many versions of the story, Ding Yuan is the orphan Lü Bu's adoptive father. That fact certainly didn't stop him from killing the man and turning his head over to Dong Zhuo, though.
