First Announced: The trilogy of Half-Life 2's episodic spin-off adventures were originally confirmed in February 2006, almost 18 months after Half-Life 2 itself was first released.

After Episode One and Two released in June 2006 and October 2007, Episode Three quickly became infamous in its failure to arrive within a reasonable time-frame (i.e. before 2010), and soon thereafter Valve became increasingly cagey about discussing the game.

Fans began to speculate that Episode Three had been ditched in favour of a full-fat Half-Life 3, and by 2017, three key writers for the series had left Valve.

One of the writers, Marc Laidlaw, made a blog post late last August which appeared to be a thinly-veiled plot dump of either Episode Three or Half-Life 3, prompting a team of fans to start adapting the plot into a game, entitled Project Borealis.

Laidlaw's post was widely interpreted as him attempting to provide closure for fans and himself, his plot dump only being permissible because the game is never going to be released (at least in this form).

Sure, it's remotely possible that Valve will release an entirely different Half-Life 3 in the future, but as the straight follow-up to Episode Two they promised? Not a chance.
