5. Prison Bathroom - Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill strikes again, this time with its unarguably superior, more cerebral sequel, which still isn't above scaring the absolute s*** out of players with a well-placed jump.

As a rule, toilets in the Silent Hill universe are best avoided where possible, and especially Toluca Prison's, because if you knock on the seemingly occupied far-end cubicle a few times, a woman will let out a violent, bestial scream as you head towards the exit.

It may not be especially clever or expectation-defying as far as jumps go, but the visuals, intense atmosphere and that horrendous sound combine to make this one of gaming's most terrifying moments without even needing to throw a single monster on the screen.
