12 Best Video Game Storylines Ever

5. Mass Effect Trilogy

Being a BioWare trilogy, it's pretty hard to separate the plots of the three Mass Effect games from each other. More so than other series', the stories of each instalment blend seamlessly into one, with the decisions you make right from the first impacting on the story later on. Looking at the trilogy as a whole, Mass Effect is a pretty classic spacefaring adventure in which you control one Commander Shepard, whose job it is to assemble a crew of interstellar races aboard the Normandy spaceship, then spearhead the interstellar efforts to combat an ancient species hellbent on destroying the galaxy. As you traverse the cosmos with your ragtag crew, you build relationships with them, and will be forced to make difficult decisions that are likely to aggrieve one crew member, while pleasing another - even getting to the point where you can choose who lives and who dies. The genius of the story isn't just in the rich, lore-filled world or the epic business of saving the galaxy, but in the intimacy of life aboard the Normandy and its eclectic mix of characters. It ultimately feels like a tale of unlikely friendships set against the backdrop of unimaginably huge events, all dictated by your in-game decisions (aside from the very end, of course), making it an excellent piece of uniquely video game storytelling that's greater than the sum of its parts.
