12 Greatest Beat ‘Em Up Video Games Of All Time

6. Mortal Kombat II (1993)

Mortal Kombat built on the exceptional mechanics of the 1992 original but upped the ante in several areas sure to grab the attention of zealous beat €˜em up aficionados the world over. The original instalment in the franchise was at the epicentre of the controversy surrounding the video games industry in the early 90s which would eventually lead to games having to be given an age rating displayed on the outer packaging. If Mortal Kombat was controversial, heaven knows how its sequel didn€™t get banned. The second game is far bloodier and has an even larger roster of the deadliest fighters from all of Earthrealm who want nothing more than to unleash one of their uber-violent fatalities. This game would also introduce the incredibly intimidating Shao Kahn as its main antagonist who has sought to enslave Earthrealm in every subsequent game in the series. Kahn went on to receive a nomination for the Worst Villain of the Year (worst as in best) in the Nintendo Power Awards.
