12 Hugely Delayed Video Games (That Ended Up Sucking)
3. Alone In The Dark
The Delay: Development of a new Alone in the Dark game began in the wake of Uwe Boll's terrible 2005 movie, but due to the movie's performance, the game was remade from scratch by Eden Games. Despite showing at E3 2006 for industry folk, it was announced shortly thereafter that the game wouldn't see the light of day until between April 2007 and March 2008. News of its release then went quiet until mid-2007, when a March 2008 date was announced, which Eden again reneged on, with it finally hitting most platforms in June of that year. I say "most", because due to frame-rate issues, the PS3 version didn't come out until November 2008. The Result: Despite boasting one of the more innovative customisation options in the survival horror genre (the ability to improvise your own weapons), Alone in the Dark never really had a chance, what with its supremely awkward control and camera schemes and unexpectedly punishing difficulty level, encouraging players to use a bizarre in-built chapter skip feature. Combat is horrible, driving is horrible, and really the only major positives are the graphics and the aforementioned weapons mechanic. A glitchy mess of a game, Alone in the Dark isn't worthy of its brilliant namesake.
