It's disappointing that the PS4 does not support backwards compatibility out of the box, but after the debacle with the PS3, it wasn't unexpected, and it seems to be something we're just going to have to get used to now for good. While I am always going to prefer having a physical copy of the game for the sake of ownership, Sony's PlayStation Now service is an interesting compromise, allowing players to stream their favourite classic games using Gaikai technology (at a price, mind). When players press a button on their PS4 controller (say, X to jump), that command will be sent to Sony's server playing the game, and then beam the video of said action back to the player. It's far from a perfect system: there are countless issues to tackle with regards to the absurd bandwidth such a service will take up, and also how it will deal with lag or interrupted connections, but I'm certainly interested to try it out and see how well it holds up. Though it's never going to be a proper substitute for backwards compatibility, Sony are clearly very committed and confident about the enterprise. Now, let's just hope it's not too costly...
