7. Horizon Zero Dawn

For many, Horizon Zero Dawn isn't just the best PS4 exclusive released in 2017, but the best new IP for any platform over the past year.

It is a beautiful, highly entertaining open-world action-adventure game, that much is clear, but ultimately, protagonist Aloy is far more appealing than the plot and gameplay surrounding her.

There is a masterpiece of a game within Horizon bursting to emerge, but it's hampered by woefully repetitive quests, laughable voice acting and facial animations, and a surprisingly dull narrative that's doled out in thoroughly uninspired fashion.

Battling robots is awesome and the game is an absolutely eye-melting experience played in 4K, but it's far too beholden to open-world bloat to be a truly excellent title, and the sequel desperately needs to improve its myriad flaws.
