12 Revealing Video Game Moments That Came Out Of NOWHERE
7. Clayface - Batman: Arkham City
After the Joker learns he's dying, the demented jester decides to go out with a bang, and devises a convoluted plan to destroy Batman’s life.
Although Batman does all he can to stop the Joker’s plans, he knows there’s something the Clown Prince of Crime isn’t telling him. Because Batman’s arch-nemesis always has an ace up his sleeve, we know the Joker has something else planned.
Just before the climax, Ra’s Al Ghul impales the Joker with his sword, seemingly killing him. To Batman’s astonishment (as well as the player’s), the Joker stands back up, maniacally cackling.
With little warning, the Joker mutates his body, revealing his true identity – Clayface. The Joker explains that his “appearances” throughout your mission were of Clayface, who took on the Joker’s likeness to play “the role of a lifetime”.
Like the best twists, this revelation leaves an impact because you feel like you should've seen it coming. If you used Detective Mode while facing the Joker earlier, you would’ve noticed he had no bones, since he was made of clay.
Although this is the most obvious example that the Joker isn’t who he says he is, there are a few subtler hints. The fact that his infected sores disappear before you face him should've alerted you that something wasn't right. When he tells you he's hiding something "right under your nose", you should've know what he meant.
Another small but crucial moment is when Harley Quinn mentions how she can’t tell which Joker is the real one. Only on the second playthrough do you realise Harley was being literal, not figurative.
