12 Stupid Gaming Moments That Unwittingly Defined The Last Generation
5. Capcom Buries The Resident Evil Franchise
The Resident Evil franchise enjoyed a significant overhaul during the PS2 era, as Resident Evil 4 repositioned the franchise as a more action-orientated type of game, retooling the gameplay completely and resulting in some of the strongest reviews for the series. The problem is that in the last generation, Capcom went too far in gearing the game towards the action crowd, while forgetting the horror roots that made it popular in the first place. Resident Evil 5 was enjoyable enough, but simply wasn't scary, and the addition of a co-operative mode just made the game feel more safe and less intense. Resident Evil 6, meanwhile, is widely viewed as the final nail in the coffin for the series, dividing the campaign into three overlong mini-campaigns, which boast a few fun moments but are essentially just boring, repetitive action slogs without any suspense or terror. The game sold well despite mixed reviews, yet the game is frequently held up as an example of a company sacrificing the soul of a franchise for profit, and with Capcom in less than great business shape, it's a warning well worth heeding for other developers already following along similar tracks.
