12 Tear-Jerking Video Game Stories That'll Melt Your Heart
8. The Fan Who Was Forever Immortalised In Total War: Rome II
As you might expect, this story starts with a sad premise: James Payne was 24-years-old when he died of liver cancer. He faced his illness with the utmost bravery and strength and it didn't stop him from enjoying his favourite gaming series, Total War. A charity called the Willow Foundation organised a trip for him to meet the developers, Creative Assembly, when one of the team had an ingenious idea. They wanted to model a character after his likeness, to immortalise him as a courageous commander of the Roman Legionnaires forever more. It worked and even today, long after James' death in 2013, you can spot his model in-game. One of the studio's team, Craig Laycock said at the time: "Every time I see his character Ill be reminded of what a great guy he was."
