3. Bioshock Series

2K Games

Another series that perfectly delivers complicated philosophical constructs in a familiar, 'shoot-everything-first-ask-questions-later' package.

Whether you prefer the underwater realm of Rapture or the high in the sky Columbia, Bioshock challenges our modern political notions by showing us what they would be in the extreme.

The series debutant had us tackle the ghastly remains of an objectivist society gone wrong. Inspired by Ayn Rand’s ‘Atlas Shrugged’, the developers take the concept of a society governed by achievement and reason, and applies mankind’s most repeating foible of hunger for power. What was meant to be a paragon of science and a society for all, descends into a death trap of torture and human experimentation.

Equally, Bioshock 2 take the ideals of collectivism, turns those son-o-bitches sideways, and sticks its book straight up its candy-ass. With perhaps an er more of sympathy about the philosophy it is dismantling, Bioshock 2 presents collectivist so bent on the greater good, that all thought of the individual is disregarded, leading her to be capable of the most sadistic acts to even her own daughter.

Bioshock Infinite tackles a far more easy to deride concept of nationalism. The hyper-racism of Columbia and extreme reactions are laughable at times, but when compared with certain groups and cults around the world, it gives us pause for thought over where we should draw the line within our own political persuasions and start considering the other side… at least up until multiple Elizabeths reveal to being our daughter and our brain explodes.
