12 Video Games That Will Change How You See The World

4. Deus Ex Series

spec ops the line
Eidos

From the series entry in 2000, to this year’s Mankind Divided, Deus Ex combines mankind’s love of conspiratorial mega factions that control the world, with our god-given natural gift for being shitty to people who are different from ourselves, and present us with one hellish vision of a dystopian future.

Yet it is the fears and attitudes towards biotech and cyborgs that I want to focus on, because it’s probably what’s going to happen.

Cybernetic limbs and human augmentation are developing at a Moore’s Law rate that has already seen Paralympians outperform Olympians, and is predicted that within our lifetimes we will see a Cyborg Olympics, crippled soldiers return to the battlefield more enhanced than before they were injured, and men and women voluntarily upgrade their failing, fleshy limbs for purpose-built, enduring multi-tools.

Is fear between those who can afford and wish to brave such ‘upgrades’ and those who can’t so farfetched? Are the traditions of religious sacrifice fighting the temptation to reach the next level of human evolution so far in the distant future? Is Keanu Reeves truly so immortal that he'll still be as youthful as ever in 2029?

Whatever the future holds for us, just don’t go accepting free upgrades willy-nilly from strangers on the street – I guarantee you’ll regret it!
