13 Flat Out Lies We Were Told Just To Sell A Video Game
4. Watch Dogs Will Be The Reason To Own A Next-Gen Console
The Lie: When the stunning first gameplay footage for Watch Dogs was shown off at E3, gamers everywhere were totally blown away. Though this was long before either the PS4 or Xbox One were announced, it seemed clear from the incredible visuals that the title would be releasing on next-gen platforms, and with its innovative, hacking-based gameplay, would surely be the reason to own a next-gen console, right? The Truth: Wrong. Even ignoring the fact that the game was delayed from being a next-gen launch title to finally hitting stores 6 months later, Watch Dogs was ultimately a victim of the increasing trend for games to be "downgraded" from the quality of their initial target footage, because developers realised that the next-gen hardware couldn't stably support such graphical quality. In addition, the game's hacking mechanics weren't anywhere near as sophisticated as expected, the missions were repetitive and the story was shockingly generic. Watch Dogs is far from a bad game, it's just another in a long line of recent disappointments, selling itself on hype that it just couldn't deliver. It ultimately failed as the "next gen killer app" it was touted as, which is, in fact, something gamers are still waiting for, regardless of which console you own.
