11. Velocity 2X
Metacritic Score: 86-90 As you can see for yourself from the Metacritic score, Velocity 2X certainly isn't a game that suffered with critics, but it's quite possibly a game you've never heard of nor played, even though Sony did offer it as part of the Instant Game Collection back in September. It's a game few have spent their time discussing, even if it's unquestionably one of the most thrilling games of last year. An ingenious blend of side-scrolling platforming and shooting along with side-scrolling spaceship action, Velocity succeeds on the strength of its variety and its gorgeous comic book-inspired visuals. Though it seems a little on the easy side at first given that the player is given infinite lives, you'll be glad for it once some of the more labyrinthine levels show up later on. With numerous collectibles on each stage, there's a ridiculously addictive quality to re-playing levels to beat your own score, adding even more value to one of 2014's most artistically brilliant games, AAA or not.
