Get past its wilfully dumb title, and Nier Replicant (no, we're not typing out its full name) is one of 2021's most successful remakes. A modernised update of the 2010 original, Replicant allows a new generation of gamers to experience one of gaming's greatest stories, this time with the added bonus of having a decent game to play alongside it.

The original Nier bore all the hallmarks of its idiosyncratic developer Yoko Taro - chiefly, great writing marred by awful visuals and clumsy combat. Replicant solves these problems by giving the graphics a much-needed facelift and recruiting action game maestros Platinum Studios to completely rework the game's battle system.

Yes, replaying the game again and again (and again) to unlock all the endings is still as frustrating as it was ten years ago, but Nier's tale of doomed relationships, tragic miscommunications and obsessive love is one worth experiencing.
