14 'Genius' Video Game Features That Were Total Accidents
10. Quake & Doom's Signature Rocket Jumps
What you think: A base physics-abusing staple of the first-person genre, especially in the 90s, blasting the area at your feet was always intended to be a way of traversing the map at speed, alongside evading an entire room of crossfire, should the need arise.
What actually happened: Perhaps a bit obviously a glitch, Quake 3's brand new physics engine was designed to govern everything from bodies being flung in all directions to projectiles whizzing past your face - except one thing the designers didn't account for, was the splash damage from a rocket unintentionally propelling the player way up into the sky.
Later adapted by cult-franchise Team Fortress, later Quakes and Doom both featured refined rocket-jump physics intentionally programmed as a direct response to the move gaining widespread recognition, becoming an established move in many 90s and early 2000s games.
