14 Incredible Video Game Stories You'll Never Stop Discussing
6. Heavy Rain
For many, Heavy Rain's ambition and slightly shaky grasp on knowing its own limits far outweighs the stumbling-blocks it sets down with things like awkward controls and spectacularly bad voice acting. Creative Director David Cage is a man who for all three of his big-budget games has taken great leaps of narrative potential, only to fall spectacularly in two out of three of them. Where both Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy (US title) and Beyond: Two Souls completely fell apart thanks to scattershot pacing and sporadic tonal changes, Heavy Rain remains consistent, telling the interlocking story of four characters involved in various aspects of tracking down the 'Origami Killer' along with a child's abduction. In the end the final revelation knocked some people for so much of a loop it became frustrating, but for the rest of us that were happy to accept, Heavy Rain - like L.A. Noire - is one of a few detective thrillers that comes agonisingly close to perfection.
