15 Batman Arkham Series Elements That Would Make Future Films Great
14. A Focus On Barbara Gordon
In the world of comics, Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Batman's long-time ally Commissioner Jim Gordon, has been kicking around since the 1960s, when she was introduced as Batgirl on both the page and the infamously camp Batman television adaptation at the same time. In 1988's The Killing Joke, one of the most widely renowned and sought after graphic novels of all time, she was paralysed by The Joker in an attempt to morally compromise her father.
Subsequently adopting the persona of Oracle, she refused to let disability get in the way of her crime-fighting ways, using her computer expertise to become an information broker in Batman's ongoing crusade for justice.
The Arkham series opened with Barbara as a paraplegic in the Oracle role, providing remote support to Batman throughout the events of both Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. She then appears in person in Arkham Knight, where her kidnap and apparent murder at the hands of Scarecrow is a heart-wrenching moment that drives the actions of both Batman and her father through to the game's conclusion.
Including Barbara and depicting her subsequent paralysis would be a powerful moment on film that would both erase painful memories of Alicia Silverstone's performance as her in the much-maligned Batman and Robin and extend her status as a powerful disabled and female role model to a wider audience. The latter would be particularly refreshing in a genre where women are all too frequently featured solely as 'damsels in distress' that serve no purpose other than needing to be saved by the hero.
