15 Best Horror Video Games Of The 2000s

6. Resident Evil 4

I'm willing to bet that more than half of the fine folks reading this can regale the comments section with stories of running in terror from chainsaw-wielding madmen with sacks over their (no doubt deformed) heads, before being cornered and losing their composure/noggin/bowel control. It's okay, we're all in the same boat here. Resident Evil 4 is fascinating in the sense that while it no doubt changed the landscape of horror gaming forever with its reflex-based, over-the-shoulder gunplay, it also heralded the demise of traditional survival horror with countless imitators abandoning any pretence of scares in lieu of the kind of explosion-laden gameplay that would make the typical FPS seem understated by comparison. Still, there's a reason so many horror fanatics stand in awe of Resident Evil 4 even today - it's that rare kind of experience you only get every few years, the kind that makes even the most hardened gorehound shriek in blood-curdling terror as they're quickly surrounded by a horde of murderous villagers before realising there's not enough ammunition to split between them.
