New York is not an easy city to make interesting. That might sound like a strange statement considering it's acted as the backbone of so many open world games, but that's partly the point: it's so familiar that players have seen it all before. They've walked these streets, visited Times Square, and tried their best to climb the Empire State Building - and this goes doubly for Spider-Man games.

It's a testament to just how good Insomniac's take on the wall crawler that they managed to make NYC feel fresh again. Though the staples remain the same, there was an attention to detail present that made the most unassuming streets appear genuinely lived in.

Throw in locations ripped straight from the wider Marvel universe, and for once you had a Spider-Man game that was enjoyable to experience at street level, rather than when soaring above copied-and-pasted cardboard buildings.
