For all the flak that Black/White gets for sticking too close to its original 2D roots, you can tell developers Game Freak simply wanted to create an instalment in the franchise that would stand the test of time alongside their new TV show that launched in the same month. As such, basic gameplay and structure involving a custom-named protagonist journeying across the lands and hoovering up the expansive lists of creatures remains the same, but it was in streamlining this ideology by speeding up battles, giving the story a bit more pathos and putting an emphasis on the newer Pokémon in the early game that really resonated with newcomers. It might have stuck to its guns a little too much to gain the adoration of those who've stuck by the series for 15 years, but there's a lot to love about Black & White, especially if you prefer the old-school, top-down camera angle to where the games would head after.
