5. Super Mario 3D Land (2011, 3DS) - 10.67 Million

Another stalwart of the industry that millions of us will snap up a release for without reading a word as to its quality, Super Mario IS gaming, and has been around for about as long. These 3D instalments take a bit of getting used to, rather like how you'll here Nintendo themselves say it was a total brain-breaker trying to conceptualise the character and very nature of platforming in a 3D space. Thankfully, what was first achieved through Super Mario 64 and iterated on through Galaxy is perfected in 3D Land, with Nintendo thinking outside the box as usual to come up with some spacial-awareness puzzles that actually force you to use the 3D slider built into the console itself. Animation is supremely excellent, power-ups aplenty and the difficulty ramps up considerably towards the end, just to remind you of Mario's more hardcore platforming roots. Perfect.
