15 Best Video Game Acting Performances Of The Decade
8. Rob Wiethoff - John Marston - Red Dead Redemption
Starting the decade off right, Rob Wiethoff gave an iconic performance as the gunslinger turned lawman John Marston in Rockstar’s Western masterpiece. While Wiethoff nostalgically brought the character back to life once again in its eventual prequel, it is in the first entry where the tragedy of John Marston truly lays heavy on our hearts.
Martson is a regretful man, but a realist who understands the situation he is in. Forced into hunting down those that wronged him all those years ago, he unwillingly becomes a puppet to a far more powerful master. Marston’s predicament is one of a man whose sins have already caught up to him, and Wiethoff’s almost mournful delivery is representative of a man whose days are numbered – even if he isn’t fully aware it yet.
Before Red Dead Redemption 2 brought them to life, this performance hinted and referenced the events that came before, and we felt the years behind Marston as Wiethoff reminisced over the past life he had finally managed to leave behind.
