Oh, look - a second Mario game (three if you count LM2). Anyway, this was another game that was surprisingly high quality. The New Super Mario Bros. series isn't known for it's originality and while the themes here are still mostly recycled from previous games, the level design trumps those games, especially the original on the DS which was just bland retrospectively. Here it's a different story. The focus is much more on coin collecting which is very enjoyable both in the main game and the coin rush mode. Levels have interesting gimmicks and can be challenging too when you want to find all the star coins. The 3D adds absolutely nothing to the game except for making the background more blurry. If you want a fairly comfortable 2D platformer, Mario delivers as always.
