15 Horrifying Video Game Easter Eggs You Totally Missed

8. Gears Of War: Judgment €“ More Creepy Haunted Paintings

Like Hitman, the Gears of War series doesn€™t usually do in for the more subtle and traditional horror tropes, preferring to go more for the €œscare them with violence€ path. Having said that, when it wants to, Gears can do a pretty damn good job of being disturbing - as we found out in Judgement. During the Library level, the surroundings are a bit darker and a lot more eerie. If you start messing about in the abandoned environment, mostly by chucking grenades at things, you might come across a painting. It will come as no surprise to learn that said painting€™s eyes seem to follow you around the room. Shooting the piece of paper that falls out with the painting might seem like an odd thing to do, but hey €“ this is Gears of War, so you might as well. And when you do, the portrait changes slightly €“ to show a fresh bullet wound, complete with blood trickling down its face. There are several of these portraits, and finding and shooting all of the in a similar manner will cause a circle of blue lights above the original picture. That is generally not a good sign €“ confirmed by the ghost showing up. The ghost does become slightly less creepy when you figure out that it isn€™t immune to bullets €“ but that first appearance is really freaky, and completely unexpected from a Gears game.
