7. Psychonauts The Burning Orphanage
As far as video game premises go, a game about kids with psychic powers infiltration other peoples' minds and taking control is certainly out there but thats what cult hit Psychonauts was about. Its normally all quirky and light-hearted fun, yet there are some deep, dark secrets that the game doesnt want you to see. More specifically, in the level Millas Dance Party youre inside the mind of Milla, your Brazilian instructor. While most of the level lives up to that name, theres one room there that Milla specifically warns you away from telling you its a party killer. To be fair, shes not wrong. Inside the room is a hellish backdrop of burning, heckling figures jeering things like Milla, why did you let us die? and Why wont you help us?, while the normally cheerful instructor begs you to leave. Then you find the scrapbook, and all is revealed; Milla used to own an orphanage that burnt down. With the kids inside. And they all died horribly. Lovely.
