One of the biggest selling points outside of the actual games themselves for the PS2, was the system's ability to play DVD discs. This was a really smart move from Sony, who realised that customers may want more from the console than just games. Even better, the PS2 was even cheaper than some high-spec DVD players of the time when it was first released in 2000, which only made the appeal of the machine even greater. The first gaming console to have such a function, playing DVD discs quickly became something the Playstation 2 was renowned for. It wasn't uncommon for non-gamers to use another family member's PS2 to watch a movie, which likely resulted in turning a few people onto videogames who perhaps wouldn't have been interested had the machine not been so diverse.
