Earlier on in the PS2's cycle, gamers complained heavily about the dreaded 'Disc Read Errors' which threatened to overshadow the quality of Sony's console.

Sadly, many of these actually led to games becoming defunct - not only did the problem corrupt save states, it also literally broke games completely, rendering the disc useless.

To combat the plethora of complaints pouring through their doors, Sony had little choice other than to placate gamers as best they could. In a show of good faith, the company offered anybody suffering from the problem free repairs, as well as a free PS2 game and even $25 vouchers/cheques.

It was all Sony could do to maintain a good relationship with their customers, and the way the company handled the affair had been roundly praised down throughout the years.
