1. Giygas - Earthbound
What in the hell is this? Why did this happen? How did I get here? A boss fight where you have zero comprehension of what it actually is.
Considering Giygas' conception(poor choice of words) comes from things such as lovemaking, murder and rape according to the game designer, it's best to keep his appearance the way it is, obscure. The other side of that, however, is that it leaves it up to our imagination, which I'm almost certain is not a good thing. There's no way out with this freak of nature.
Previously talking about games that unexpectedly shift tone, Earthbound is arguably the greatest offender of this. Colourful, child-like sprites with turn-based combat manifested itself into a crimson, nightmarish hell with echoes of fetuses and various other theories.
No change to the combat, though, it's the only saving hope of this battle.
