8. Virtue's Last Reward
I’m not the worst at puzzle games, but Virtue’s Last Reward had me stumped more than a few times. It’s not just a puzzle game though, it’s an intricately crafted visual novel with a story filled with more mysteries than you can shake a stick at. We’re getting a little ahead of ourselves here though. Virtue’s Last Reward is, in its own right, a fantastic game, but if you’ve got access to a copy, I’d highly recommend checking out the first game in the series too, 999.
The general idea is that you’re captured, and stuck in an unknown location with a bunch of complete strangers, and forced to take part in a series of deadly games by an unknown antagonist known simply as “Zero”. It’s tense, creepy and exciting, and has some of the best twists and story points in fiction in recent memory.
It’s still a very niche series though, and there’s plenty of people who just don’t know about it. Give it a try, and you may very well be blown away.
