15 Most Underrated Video Games Of The Decade (So Far)
11. Strider
It's easy to hate on the vast majority of titles that come out for both PS Plus and Xbox's Games With Gold - they're nearly always over-pixellated 'retro' affairs that look about as at home on your new half-grand hardware as you would pitching a tent on a cactus.
But - and it's a Kardashian-sized one - there are some downright brilliant gems tucked away inside these offerings, and the remake of Strider is just one of them. Basically throwing up the middle-fingers at any semblance of story outside of "You're a ninja... and here's some guys!" it's a perfect nostalgic mix of when game narratives didn't matter, rewarding you with constant upgrades that flesh out Strider's moveset considerably.
The whole thing moves at lightspeed too, with a difficulty curve to match its old-school style, but it's when you get the hang of how pixel-perfect you can make each jump, how to charge your attacks to skewer the most guards simultaneously and a certain "HOLY MOTHER THAT WAS AWESOME" slow-motion screen-kill of a move, you'll be laughing like a mass-murdering Joker in no time.
