7. Quantum Break Is An Ambitious Failure

Remedy Entertainment have made some cracking games over the years, namely the superb first two Max Payne games, and the criminally underrated Alan Wake. Their latest effort, Quantum Break, revolves around characters who gain the ability to manipulate time, and boasts a daring mixture of high-concept gameplay with live-action video clips. It's an interesting idea, and we want to believe in it, though from what we've seen and heard so far, we suspect this Xbox One exclusive might fall slightly short of the mark. For starters, the implementation of live-action "episodes" sounds like more of a gimmick than something many audiences will actually take a liking to, because when they play a game, they want to play a game. Then there's the 9-minute gameplay video shown off at Gamescom last month, which looks mildly entertaining if not especially original. Gameplay seems to be a mix of Max Payne and Infamous, though it will ultimately hinge on how creatively the time shift mechanic can be utilised. Still, the graphics look awesome, and we're definitely rooting for it, so hopefully we're wrong on this one.
