13. The Little Clues Along The Way
This is difficult to talk about without giving anything away. So here by a spoiler warning for this point. With Psychonauts, there are a lot of little things to discover from a second playthrough. In Basic Training for example, did you ever notice the bunnies on the battlefield toward the end of the level? Keeping in mind that Basic Training takes place in Coach Oleanders mind, those bunnies are far more significant than they appear. When I first played the game, I just assumed the rabbits were a joke, wandering around in army helmets like soldiers of war. Towards the end of the game however, we discover that Coach Oleander was traumatised as a child by his father, a butcher who had killed several of Little Olys closest pets to make rabbit stew. Evidently, even as an adult, Oleander is haunted by this memory, hence the little rabbits wandering around his brain.
