15 Reasons Why Psychonauts Is The Greatest Game Ever Made

14. Collecting Figments

Collectables usually suck. They nearly always feel like an afterthought that€™s been hastily added to the game at the last minute to give the illusion of depth. Either that or they€™re so ridiculously hard to find that they require the player to go out of their way to discover them. Assassin€™s Creed comes to mind here, a game in which the player is expected to gather together quite literally hundreds of flags from the various cities in the game, scouring every nook and cranny of the landscape laboriously in order to find them all. They can be a nightmare, but not in Psychonauts. In fact, collecting Figments, or Figments of the Imagination to give them their full title, is probably one of the most satisfying things about the game. They€™re not difficult to find; in fact, most of them are just lying around in plain sight waiting to be collected. What makes them so great is that they are designed to feel like aspects of the environment, dotted about like actual props. Each level has its own unique set, meaning that the Figments are themed around the levels themselves. Unlike a lot of other games, collectables in Psychonauts are a crucial part of the setting with their own personalities. As you start to collect them all and clearing out entire stages, you may even find yourself missing them.
