5. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (PS3)

Naughty Dog have so far been a studio yet to put a foot wrong, instead consistently getting better by making some gargantuan leaps between IPs across each subsequent generation. From Crash Bandicoot to The Last of Us, the wealth of talent within their four walls is staggering, and with Uncharted 4 being the first time they've done a fourth main narrative instalment, it doesn't seem to be abating any time soon. Back to Uncharted though, and the series that gave everyone the Indiana Jones-slaying, downright loveable little scamp Nathan Drake. Everything about Nate from Nolan North's fantastically-timed quips that come just as he makes it out of some life-or-death situation to - in Uncharted 3 in particular - some far heavier narrative beats that pad out he and partner Sully's history, the trilogy overall is just as worth celebrating. By the time the studio came to doing a third Uncharted they knew the characters and motivations down-pat, freeing up the game design side of things to continue down the awesome path set by Uncharted 2's train level. That meant more physics-based powerhouse levels and programming marvels that took you through a great many different scenarios all without switching rendered models. The shipwreck escape in particular is now a series highlight, and an exemplary showing of a studio firing on all cylinders.
